After a busy weekend, last night I finally had a moment to sit down and relax for a few minutes and watch some TV. As I scanned the schedule I came across TVLand and the "Andy Griffith Show", "Ahhh! Eureka!" I said to myself (yes even when speaking to myself I sound like a moron). I poured myself a nice glass of wine, and settled in my favorite chair and prepared to be relaxed and entertained.
Much to my shock, horror and outrage however, this episode was in color and there on my screen was that pathetic Howard Sprague character from the later episodes. "Oh the humanity!" I cried.
Now as any fan of the show knows (you aren't a fan? freak!) there is a definite cutoff of where the "classic" episodes begin and the "bleh phooey" ones begin. A non-Barney episode simply sucks. His departure coincided with the use of color on the show. You see color, change the channel. The later episodes feature this weird pedophile looking Howard Sprague a fifty year old man living with his mother who you could just tell was the type taking porn pics of little kids in his basement. Also an annoying deputy who say "heh, heh, heh" after every question. Dear gawd. I know TVLand has to buy the whole package of the show but take those color ones and just toss them and show us the great classic ones only. Obviously, my bid for a few minutes relaxation were ruined.
There is a cutoff I think on a lot of shows. MASH sucked after Trapper and Henry Blake left. Especially when that fruity Winchester idiot was added. Cheers after Diane left was not as good to me. And I could go on. Most shows tend to go way past their prime too often in my opinion.
I know these will run out and one day, soon I hope, I can again sit back and enjoy the real Mayberry all gray and colorless thank you. One day....
